Prosecutors say a Missouri woman admitted to beating her toddler to death because he would not stay quiet in his crib, then hid his body and went back to sleep.
St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Bob McCulloch told reporters that his office was in the process of filing second-degree murder charges against 20-year-old Shelby Dasher for the death of her one-year-old son, Tyler. McCulloch said Dasher admitted to detectives that she repeatedly struck the child in the head and body early Tuesday morning because he would not stay quiet in his crib.
She then allegedly dumped his body in the bushes and went back to sleep. McCulloch said the difference between first-degree and second-degree murder would be a lack of evidence of premeditation.
Preliminary autopsy results indicated that Tyler died from blunt force trauma to the head, according to McCulloch. The medical examiner did not see any signs of prior injuries or abuse, he added.
Dasher was being held on $500,000 bond Wednesday night.
She told police that her son disappeared from her Affton home Tuesday morning, and said she last saw him when putting him to sleep around 10:30 p.m. Monday night. He was gone, Dasher said, when she woke up around 11:00 a.m.
Police said there were no signs of forced entry at the house. Nearly 100 officers joined the search for the one-year-old, according to St Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch.
A few hours later, the body of a young boy was discovered by people walking a dog in a wooded area on the edge of a nearby cemetery, Fitch said Tuesday. Authorities eventually confirmed that it was Tyler.
Two friends of Shelby Dasher told KSDK that they could not believe she was accused of killing her son.
“She would have done anything for Tyler. If she had to go without, that that’s what it would have been. She wouldn’t have thought twice about it,” Holly Barton said.
After Tyler’s body was found on Tuesday, Chief Fitch said whoever was responsible for his death is “a pretty sick person … Anybody that would take a child and leave a child in that condition in a wooded area like this needs to be dealt with severely by the justice system.”
Friends and family planned to hold a vigil for Tyler Dasher at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
